As the regional Center for the Northern Territory Darwin and its surrounding areas have quite a few gems to visit. Today I am sharing with you 5 places I think you shouldn't miss.
Even before i attended the Mindil Beach markets for the first time i had fallen in love with the sunsets from the beach via Instagram and it did not disappoint. The skies set ablaze with a wonderful spectrum of orange shades as it set into the sea and it was all complimented by food stalls with a wide selection of fresh seafood, Asian cuisine, burgers, vegetarian and lots of street performances to keep you entertained even after the sun has gone down. This should be number 1 on your list of things to do. Every Monday and Thursday during the dry season.
The Deckchair Cinema
During the dry season Darwins Deckchair Cinema puts on an array of films both current and vintage each night of the week. Take yourself down a picnic or buy food at the venue along with a drink ranging from soft to ciders, wines and beers and then settle down with a pillow on your large and comfy deck chair to watch the film with the stars overhead and possums rustling in the trees. It is definitely an experience not to be missed.
Wangi Falls - Litchfield NP
Said to be inhabited by the giant rainbow snake from the dream time stories Wangi Falls is a brilliant place to cool down in Darwins heat and humidity, without the overrun hustle of Florence Falls. A large pool of cool fresh water, free from crocodiles, awaits you shallow at one end and deep at the other making it perfect to dive off the rocks by the falls into the depths, float on the surface admiring the sky or swim. Take the time to read up on the Falls dream time history before walking back up to the carpark and having a good old fashioned Aussie BBQ in the picnic area.
Kakadu National Park covers an aread around the size of switzerland so putting Ubirr Lookout on your list of things to do is a must. Lose yourself in the lush green views that stretch for miles, stories of what it would have looked like in the wet (or dry) season. Particularly beautiful later in the day as the sun is starting to dip from its high point.
Maguk - Kakadu NP
Maguk Falls is a short 20 - 30 minute trek from the car park over rocky terrain so while good walking shoes would be advised they are not nesissary, I did this trek in sandals. Maguk is another gem of cool calm water topped up by a small waterfall and with depths down to 30 meters and crocodile free, though you will spot fish swimming in the shallow areas. Float on the cool water, explore the small cave area at the far end or jump from the high pedestal's, then lounge out on the rocks drying off before your walk back to the car park.
